When It Doesn’t Go As Planned

No matter how hard we try to accomplish business goals, many stops, trips, stumbles, and redirects will come about. You can have an endless number of dreams, goals, and aims in life, but this does not mean they will come to be. Surely, having reached all of our dreams by the end of our lives would be magnificent (so we think), but sometimes that is just not how things will pan out. What can you do when it doesn’t go as planned?

While with a strong aim to create my future and continue to access many opportunities, I recently came to a big halt right in the middle of the Detroit airport. You see, for months I had been churning away at trying to find wanted speaking engagements to participate in. I had a few that I had been welcomed into, and this particular merry-go-round was surely to be a place of great opportunity and equally awesome impact. I was supposed to be going to Madison, WV for an occupational therapy conference as a speaker. I had everything in order: flight booked, room reserved, transportation planned, etc. Even with everything situated, I did not make it to my destination. I did not take the time to see how the disarray that I was to face had slowly started to unravel from the beginning.

This is the part of the story where I tell you to make sure you are paying attention so you don’t miss what can be. While I had planned everything out, none of that process came with ease. In fact, I hit walls everywhere I was turning but still, I wanted to keep fighting the good fight. After a hugely delayed flight and a missed connection, I knew I was not making it to this conference. I was a crying mess, right there in the terminal and I didn’t care who would see my tears. From my loved ones, I got a little push of wisdom, from strangers I got a series of kind messages about my clothing, and for my own good, I took a moment to find a book to read to reframe my mindset. I started writing a letter to my present self about all I had recently overcome in this whirlwind of a week, and about how proud I was of myself for facing it all and working to overcome it. Then, I ran across a book that would change my life and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. It told me so much more about the power of not stopping and things to do to propel via positive, wanted, and forward momentum.

Life is a bit funny sometimes and it will test your patience, judge your character, and push you to limits that you did not even know existed. However, if you are willing to just take a look at the world around you, there will be a light just beyond the storm. I can see it right now. Give yourself a chance to understand that not everything is meant to be and yet, what is to be, will be. It almost sounds too simple, but it is more than true.

On the forever-winding road of entrepreneurship, things will not always go your way and life will not be perfect. Challenges happen and plans change. However, there is one guarantee in it, and that is, if you really want your dreams to come true, all it takes is one more step. Who knows (I do), what you really need could be just beyond your fears, storms, and hopes. So, why not just keep going?

I will be a part of the very small percentage of people who actually live out their dreams – how do I know this, because little by little, this is already in motion and I can see it. Besides, I already know God has a plan for me, and I know that in His time, it will all come to pass; that is as perfect as life gets. I will take the time to be okay with mistakes, redirects, and perceived failures because I know all of those things do not control my destiny or outcomes – they are just a part of a past moment in time and I am creating a multitude of moments that I can forever be proud of.

Plans may change and redirects may occur in your business growth and constant evolution, but will you be prepared to face yourself and your options in the process?

Origins of Peace

Individually Defining "Peace"

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you define peace?

There are no limits or right or wrong answers to this question…so what is your first thought?

– Breathing Easily?

– Joy?

– Understanding Clarity?

Knowing what peace means to you has to be the first step in creating what you want. Maintaining the value of how you define peace will carry you through countless situations and positions in your life. So, take a moment and write down what it means for you. Allow your mind to wander and become completely engaged with what it is you seek for your life.

Creating Your "Peace"

Peace is something that only you can create for yourself. Please do not define and then discourage yourself if you cannot create what you know to be “peace.”

The real value of peace is held exactly where you want it to be. So, start from the beginning with baby steps:

1. Take on one area of your life and do it diligently.

2. Course-correct and readjust your timeline, needed steps, etc., when it is necessary (don’t wait to do this).

3. Generate positive environments in your immediate circles of life – home, relationships, partnerships, business processes, etc. This means changing the daily view of the world around you.

4. Be patient with yourself while things begin to shift.

5. Lead with intention and integrity.

6. Know that there is no such thing as perfect.

7. Do not let external or internal depictions and perceptions shift your aim.

Maintaining

What is it that you want to have? Keep that answer in mind and stay focused. This, of course, does not mean that you will always easily grasp what you aim for, but it does mean that nothing can stop you except you. Now, ask yourself what you will do when something different from your aim comes about. The answer should be that you will continue to push forward. If that is not your answer, even in a future moment, you need to gain some mental strength. Your awareness, clarity, and ability to “recover” after difficult moments will be of value here. This can be a very good time in which you seek outside help from consistent and reliable sources. Are you ready and willing to do the hard work?

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

What we place meaning on will not always mean something to others, and that’s okay.

On any given day, you decide to define your life, and that can include your values, traditions, clothing, culture and so much more.

It can be difficult to focus on the things that mean something to you when you have fears, doubts, or concerns about how others carry what you are sharing with the world.

The joy of your life comes from what you need and how you make it happen.

If you’re carrying your culture in everything you do, remember that many people do not understand what you are doing or why you are doing it.

There are many times when you will feel like someone’s thoughts will make you question everything that you are.

When that happens, understand that you must stand strong and continue to be yourself.

Take a moment to think about what means something to you, write it down, and take joy in being wonderfully you.

Don’t change your values for anyone; enjoy the life that you lead.

Dear Mixed Girl,

Do you understand the value and powerful potential that comes from learning and sharing your wisdom gained from overcoming challenges in your “mixed” journey?

With every turn in the road and place where you find yourself growing and developing, you must learn something.

There is no time in life when you have all the answers, but with a bit of support and dedication, there is a greater opportunity for smoother transitions and reached goals.

Sometimes the missing piece to the puzzle of another person’s life is the moment of sharing that you can grant them from a meaningful place or space in time.

Mixed girl, there are so many moments in your life where things may seem shaky, confusing, and difficult, but know that you will prosper.

You have so many things you can give others in education and wisdom by repeatedly working through who you are and being the greatest version of yourself.

There is hope in every today and promises in every tomorrow if you can remember to find the goodness around you and fight through the challenges that arise.

Live through the fantastic value of who you are, and you will find that powerful way to give back to the world.

Meaningful Alignment

Walking in disarray, creating dysfunction, having a pity party, wallowing in self-doubt, and seeking external validation in countless ways to fix your internal concerns are tangible and easy to do; sadly, many of us do these things in some way or another daily. Even if you found that one of those previously mentioned things hit home for you in a shocking way, what is to come below is what you need to apply to your life immediately. Meaningful alignment and leverage are created by design if only you regularly do a few things on purpose.

Manifestation of your future starts now. What you do, say, and are exposed to mentally, spiritually, and physically impacts everything else, as you know. However, what do you do when you are seeking an adjustment to reach alignment for your future? Every part of what you do and what is around you is contributing to the alignment of your future and purpose, so be mindful, completely satisfied, and intentional.

Mindfulness

The path ahead of you starts quite literally with what is ahead of and around you. Are you being mindful of what is right before your very eyes? When was the last time you counted your blessings and claimed true satisfaction and thankfulness for every small thing around you throughout an entire day? I bet at least one person can say they have never done this. Therefore, it is now time for you to start making this a new habit that will later become a regular part of your life.

Alright…who is saying, “I don’t have time for that.” Do you have time for the success and wealth that you want? How can you be thankful for what you want in the future if you are not creating alignment and thankfulness starting in your journey right now? I bet you have time now…

Satisfaction

Really honoring and accepting the gift and blessing of what is around you creates meaningful alignment. Think about how much you have to be thankful for. Leveraging your life by using what you have is a grand opportunity, and you have to be able to do that in ways that make sense for you. You do not need to have a lot to make a difference, nor do you have to have a mansion to be thankful for your happy home and healthy family. Are you following me?

Start doing the most with what you have now. Begin each day by being thankful. Say things out loud about what how you are happy with what you have inside yourself and in your external environment. Real satisfaction with deep meaning will solidify leverage in alignment and create shifts in your mentality. You will start to see that everything you are doing to continue improving your life is moving in a smoother flow and rhythm because you can always re-center your thoughts.

Intentionality

Do not let life just happen to you. You have a lot more control over things than you may think. This does not mean that you need to be overzealous and worried about everything. Rather, you need to be intentional with your actions and focused on what is necessary. Intentional relationships, mindset, education, interactions, time spent doing all things, the type of information and media you feed your mind, and how often you sit in silence all affect outcomes and your future. Do you understand?

Intentional actions are critical. While no one can follow you around and keep an eye on your every move while also paying attention to your every thought, you can choose to be intentional if you wish to have the future you desire and the successes that will impact everything around you.

Check-In Time

What are you learning from this? I hope you learned these things about and for yourself:

1. You have the power to create leverage in your meaningful alignment along your journey and for your future successes.

2. You are pre-destined for greatness, and your purpose, gift, and talents will make room for you if you first make room for them.

3. Dedication to your craft requires a shift in your path, mentality, and every element of your internal and external environments.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Women Are Powerful

There are countless things that a girl or woman can achieve when she has freedom, rights, access to education, and the ability to be herself. Am I right ladies?

There is no limit as to what/whom a become when she envelopes herself in what she is capable of doing, who she knows herself to be, and every effort to become a greater version of herself.

Life, experiences, culture, society, trauma, negative “judgment” from others and so many other things can teach us as girls as=nd women false narratives about who we are, were, or what we can/cannot be. However, it is our job and forever mission to understand and work hard to start changing the world by working on ourselves and finding that true power that lives within.

No matter what you have heard or experienced, if you have not heard this before or lately, let me be the first to say that you are amazing. Don’t just take my word for it – the depth of women’s empowerment and what you need to get from it starts with the work you will do. Write it down and put it on everything that is to be in front of your face – your phone, computer, your mirror, etc. The first step to your forever greatness starts now.

Girls who see great women, learn from wise females, and are encouraged to be amazing as they are will flourish in every way possible. This is one of the best gifts that you can give – girl’s empowerment, especially when it is based on what you have learned and grown through.

Only when we can silence the doubts, be happy with who we are, and appreciate the strength in our voices can we make a difference in the world around us. We are all responsible for leaving a legacy behind, shaping history, and helping others rise; women, work hard for that starting by transforming yourself

Every day, you must ask yourself, “What can I do to make the most of today?” The answer to this question is not all about a task, it is about how you will treat yourself for the best version of your present and the future you aim to have.

While we do not have the answers to why things may not be perfect or easy from day to day, we do know that as women we can do anything that we work hard for and aim to do.

If someone could examine the most common character descriptions of women, they would include words like strong, overcomers, highly capable, dedicated, diligent, wise, empathetic, emotional at times, intelligent, and compassionate beyond words.

Never lose sight of who you are, what peace you can bring, are what you are capable of achieving. Look around you, seek guidance, wisdom, and support, and tap into your power especially when you are feeling down, doubtful, or confused.

Know that the reflection looking back at you in the mirror is so much more than what you have experienced, what you physically see, or what others may say. You are powerful, capable, and amazing! Never forget it.

Women’s empowerment is a tool and girl’s empowerment is a guide, but both start inside and blossom into something that can change the world!

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

Do you know how much the world changes when parents understand their mixed child from the inside out at all phases of life? Many things will be faced as mixed people starting even before birth, and being prepared, educated, and aware can mean the difference between support being present and pain walking freely in. Now, there is no way to have all of the answers — understanding that the world is not kind and there will be a series of unfortunate events throughout a mixed person’s life is necessary for a parent to understand. This is a critical thing to realize before a child is brought into the world and throughout their entire life. Mixed girl, having that support and understanding of parents, guardians, godparents, etc., is essential, so don’t be afraid to speak up and share your truth. Parents (and those who guide and lead), it is your responsibility to learn, listen, and be there – it will not be easy (ever), but if you try to “get it” without judgment, your mixed child will be far better off. Understanding is not knowing exact feelings; it is putting yourself in a frame of mind to truly sympathize and empathize with another's heart, mind, and soul, and love makes this possible. Parenting a mixed child is an experience that is unlike any other, but if you are equipped to understand, engaged in educating yourself, and open to love through the pain and growth, it is a beautiful journey that will be a gift for everyone who will be directly and indirectly impacted.

Follow-Up Article Based on The “Dear Mixed Girl” Letter “Parents Who Understand”

Understanding Feelings

At the turn of every corner, so it will seem, a “mixed” child will have experiences ranging from identity concerns to being bullied for simply being who they are. As parents, caregivers, leaders, guardians, etc., you will have to understand what that means for the child, teen, young adult, etc., so that you can gather how that affect their feelings. These things that may seem minor in the moment can have a lasting imprint on a person’s life, especially if they are addressed and support in effective ways.

Understanding What The World Sees

To the world, a mixed person can be seen as beauty, evil, filthy, pride, privilege, and everything in between. Coupling any present issues of identity or lack of awareness within a child, there can be concerns that present themselves on the exterior as well. It is important to not only be aware of what the world sees, but know what that means for what will be face by a mixed person their entire life.

Preparing Your Mind and Heart For What Will Be Said

If you have a loved one in your life, a child, teen, or young adult that is “mixed” and of a diverse cultural/ethnic/racial background, your mind and heart need to be slightly on-guard, full of patience, and always ready prepared to listen with your heart. Pain inflicted with intent to someone who is simply being themselves can cut very deep; when you see or feel that pain in the sense of empathy, it may impact as well, but you must be prepared to offer support in whatever way is necessary and in order.

Leaving Judgment At The Door

No matter what a mixed person may express or share with you, you must leave any judgment at the door. Unless you have truly walked in their shoes, you will not fully understand what they are facing, and that is okay. You can try to get into a healthy mindset by being in-tune, educated, and emotionally enough to leave some of your biases behind. Jumping into attack or trying to speak about what you would have done or downplaying a situation that requires love and support will not help – just pay attention and seek outside assistance, as needed.

Being Dedicated To Helping Success and Happiness Be A Reality

Crafting a future is about a series of events lining up with grounded feet, wise counsel, personal transformation, emotional intelligence, internal joy, and sound awareness of identity (just to name a few things). When you are a part of shaping a mixed girl’s future, you must be dedicated to helping her find who she is and this takes a lot of work, dedication, and tailoring of a lifestyle. There is no one-size fits all and you will never have all of the answers. Being there to offer support and present how self-created success and happiness are possible, will make her life change forever, and that starts with how you show up.

The “Dear Mixed Girl” letters are a series from Dr. KayLa N. Allen that share experiences, motivation, and compassion. Setting Your Sights

Being able to view what you want is how you may be able to approve what you see into the vision set before you.

A set sight of destruction or a belief that has come from fear or doubt will be met with challenges.

A path of confusion or mismanagement may lead to a season of blundering.  Wandering around looking at a little of this and a little of that, stepping off of the path because something sounded nice or looked pretty, etc. may not be the wisest thing to do. You need a little bit of target practice!

There are no challenges that will be unmet. The real challenge is how you will show up and address what is before you.

Willfully centering yourself is when you shift from a level of clarity to a level of positioned elevation.

When was the last time strategically focused on then released that which you really wanted? This practice may sound crazy or a bit ridiculous, but it is the reality of creating a vision and manifesting something by embodying what you really want.

Where is your sight set? If seeing something that may not be within reach at the moment without a few steps before it, you may need to re-adjust your plan. If you are thinking about things that are of your past and they no longer align with who you are today, you have some deep thinking to do about why this may be and what you need to do to get yourself back in “working order”.

Are you thinking about success? Success is defined by only you, so if you have levels of success be mindful of how you may be addressing them with yourself at the core of it. Remember that when you are aiming for success, you are doing things for more than yourself. I always remind myself that God gave me the gift of who I am and what I am supposed to do so that I can bless others – that is powerful, and I am thoroughly grateful for it.

Are you only imagining possibilities? If the intention is to focus, how can you do so if there are only moments of daydreaming, hoping, or imagining. Surely, there must come a time when strategies, goals, seeking wise counsel, and making a plan must come into play.

Whatever your sights may be set on now, know that what you want in the future will depend on the building blocks you see right now.

Set your sights on a plan and be willing to gently shift so that you can clearly see what is there waiting for you.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

How strong would you be willing to hold on to the person you know yourself to be?

Give and take is how many things may work in life, but it does not have to be true for how you see and know yourself.

You may see yourself fitting into many spaces because of your “vibe” and having different views or opinions, but this doesn’t mean you have to trade one part of yourself to fit into another space or place.

Your identity and your freedom to be who you are within your culture, ethnicity, or race are not to be bargained with-you are for sale in any sense of the word.

If you understand that you are a treasure and your blended freedom to be all you are is golden, then you know that you cannot trade one part of who you are for anything else.

There will not come a time when you have to become something you are not, so don’t think about what you must let go of.

Stand strong in knowing who you are because you have no need to settle for the less than the fullness of that.

You are worthy of being all you are, and nothing is worth selling or trading your unique identity or freedom-not today, not ever.
