Caregiving Is A Two-Way Street

When we have the opportunity to give support in meaningful ways, there are duties and outcomes that are beyond what can be seen. You are giving love, support, kindness, and grand gift of positive outcomes for more than one person, if you really think about it.

Have you ever been faced a difficult season in your life and needed the care or support of someone else? I’m sure that the answer is yes.  Now, think about why you leaned on a particular person or team and how your “person”, spouse, favorite physician/provider, or loved one made you feel while they were supporting you. What did it take and what did they do to make that a reality?

There are countless moving parts when it comes to your well-being but know that caregiving at its best is a two-way street. The way that you are being served/supported and the way that you are giving sharing your heart/receiving support work hand in hand.

In my doctoral research (Doctor of Healthcare Administration) I have been working looking through the lens of healthcare leadership and family/spouse cancer caregivers, so let’s shine a light on the importance of both and how they can and should work together.

Leaders in healthcare who are effective, compassionate, and competent who also have clear guidance and balanced support from administration can position themselves, physicians, nurses, management, patients, and families to thrive. Mutual benefit of medical caregivers and patients is how outcomes can be positive and reach levels that are wanted.

On the opposite end of the spectrum of caregivers, people who are loved one of someone who needs support whether throughout an illness or in a life battle can find balance when there is an understanding of the needs of both parties. Having a give and take structure accompanied with balance, compassion, and competence when you are caring for someone is how a caregiver (clinical or informal) and individual can thrive.

Medical and informal cancer caregivers in cancer care and many other fields of health care have the unique opportunity to work together effectively when there is awareness, high quality systems in place, resources shared, physical presence of transformational health care administration, and competence present.

We, as caregivers and leaders, must finds ways to strategically create a space where we can provide care while we also care for ourselves. So, what can you do to make that happen?

Start taking inventory of what you have within yourself so that you can understand how you can transform yourself and level up.

Place a high value on the care that you give and who you are providing the care to, at all times.

Understand that you do not know all of the answers so you can work to bridge present gaps in care or understanding.

Seek patience within yourself and your environment as you are ultimately in charge of your well-being.

Speak up if you need guidance, re-direction, support, or some sort of an adjustment for yourself or who you are supporting.

If you are a caregiver, I applaud the work that you do. Know that you are as important as what you do. Challenge yourself to be well and do well in the support you provide, and you will soon learn that your evolution matters and caregiving truly is a two-way street.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

Do you know the value and beauty of the color of a mixed, loving relationship?

While you come from a combination of “color” and mixed racial/ethnic background, there is something so powerful and beautiful to recognize in that love.

When we can love someone (in a “mixed” relationship) who may not look like us, that is wonderful, and it brings forth meaningful diversity and shared experiences at a different level.

Recognize that you are a mixture of worlds, cultures, and loves that are limitless.

When you see the blood that comes out of your body, it is just as red as anyone else’s, right?

You are no less than anyone else, nor are your parents or anyone you choose to love or spend your life with.

Bringing together different perspectives, cultures, and lifestyles is how the world evolves and finds more ways to connect, so look at how amazing you are and how you are changing the world!

Whatever mixed relationship you may come from or create in the future, know that it is something beautiful, and it is to be appreciated for everything great that resides within it.

Letter Entitled “The Color of Your Loving Relationship”

The “Dear Mixed Girl” letters are a series from Dr. KayLa N. Allen that share experiences, motivation, and compassion. These letters are linked to the “Dear Mixed Girl, What is Your Identity?” coaching program. Other related messaging that Dr. KayLa creates is to re-shape the way that mixed girls and women think about themselves and how they contribute to the world by being themselves.

No “mixed” experience is the same, but many parts of the biracial/multi-ethnic experience are similar. It is in these similarities that we can find individuals truths and ways in which we can become the best version of ourselves regardless of what the world may show us.

Dr. KayLa N. Allen’s greatest hope is to share with others her truth and what lives inside of her so that there can be sustainable changes and powerful impact in those living the life of a “mixed” girl.

Appreciate Life’s Beauty

Most of the things that we want in life are just beyond a sightline, fear, space of opportunity, or a dream. While it may sound simple enough, the typical thing that many of us do is cloud what could be with a fog of challenges and doubts. Having gratitude of what is right in front of you and appreciating life’s beauty is a gift to be withheld.

When was the last time that you took account of what you have in your life?

Do you often look at what you have been blessed with on a regular basis?

Do you regularly take a moment to meditate on what you have today (as it is a manifestation of what you once dreamed of)?

What do you have that you have not recently looked deeply into and given a greater meaning to?

Giving ourselves empowerment when things are difficult can be so fulfilling and wonderful. It can equally feel amazing when our loved ones or friends give us the support that we may need from time to time. However, it is ultimately up to you to make a decision to create a different perspective on the life that you lead.

If I speak highly of what is ahead, and you walk backward into a field of beauty, you cannot expect to appreciate what is present. Opening your eyes and pushing yourself to shift your field of view is how you can learn to value what is in front of you; this is how you appreciate life’s beauty in all of its’ forms.

How can you truly be prepared for what you want in life if you cannot place a high value on what your life has already been blessed and gifted with in every season?

Surely, there have been ups and downs, but there are countless moments of gratitude that must be counted and reflected upon.

What do you want in your life?

What are you willing to do for and within yourself to create lasting shifts for a promising future?

How will you appreciate life’s beauty every day of your life?

No matter what future you are shaping or what your purpose may be, your goals start with you valuing the now with high regard and attention to gratitude.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Do you know that what you face is not always something you asked for or something you have to welcome?

Seeing the world around you for what it is can be a challenge as a person from a mixed-race/multicultural background.

Knowing that what you may see does not have to be a part of your world or your future is a challenge that you can tackle.

War may arise around you, but you are armed with courage, greatness, and unique power unlike any other.

Your identity may trigger feelings, conversations, or behaviors in others that are negative, but you do not have to accept them.

The choices that you make will shape who you are and what your future will be.

You are wonderful, kind, beautiful, and a force to be reckoned with, so you do not have to accept any negativity that may arise around you.

No war that grows like weeds along your path and attacks your perception of your identity or sits amid your truth is incapable of being cut back or eliminated with the power of your mind, joy in your spirit, and love within your heart.

Try Now, Not When

Having goals is a wonderful thing, but if you find yourself constantly telling yourself that you will get to something or you will start something when you have accomplished something, you may miss out on something wonderful right now. Perfection may sound great and it may seem tangible, but it is neither practical or necessary when you have your purpose and passion intact.

Why is it that we tell ourselves that we must be perfect, 100% ready, in an ideal place, complete, fully accomplished, etc. to get something done? Who said to you in some space or time that you needed to seek perfection in who you are or what you do at all times?

A road of trying with some imperfections or incomplete “tasks”, could lead to positive outcomes, whereas not trying at all will lead to a dead end.

Belief in yourself is one thing that you must hold onto when you think that you have to know all of the answers.

Belief in yourself is one thing that you must cherish when you do not understand how your dream will come to fruition, even though you putting in the necessary work right now.

Belief in yourself is what you can also hold in your heart and mind when doubts arise, fears are in the midst of your plans, and hopelessness tries to seep into your world.

There is nothing that you cannot obtain with some imperfections, flaws, “failures”, and stumbles as you try to make your dreams a reality with logic and wisdom in your toolbox. You must always believe in yourself, first and foremost.

Ladies, if you are not in a place financially where you can afford designer labels or high end clothing that you may desire, there are many things that you can do to shop on a dime and still look great. Ask me how I know… 🙂  I love a great thrift store find! Do well with what you have, and be beautiful from the inside out! People cannot deny your light.

People, if you are scared to try something new because you haven’t completed your degree or you don’t have a formal college education, and you think that no one will hear you or respect you, start off small and use what you have living inside of you. You can do a lot by just being the current and best version of yourself!

There is nothing that cannot be done without a bit of faith, hope, and a lot of effort – notice that I did not say perfection. You do not have to be perfect to accomplish anything.

Do not believe that any journey accomplished started off with 100% perfection or ease.

Speaking from experience, many people are not handed anything. I can guarantee you that if you are reading this and the message is hitting home for you, that most of the people in your circle had to work very hard to get where they are.

I was handed nothing. I had to fight for and work hard for everything that I have earned. If this sounds like you, in this, it is an amazing thing because no one can ever take your efforts, title, letters, degrees, etc. away from you. Now is your time to make the most of what you have. You must hold your head high and be proud of what you have accomplished, as it is no minor miracle that you have done what you done to make it to this great space in your life.

You are not walking on this Earth and living and breathing in your purpose to be someone else. You are to fit into someone’s timeline or description of your identity.

Any idea of how things must be or thoughts on perfection, if they were placed into your mind by anyone or anything, that is something that you need to evaluate and walk yourself through, because this is not reality and it is certainly not you.

If you have a dream, vision, or something that you want to do – make it happen!

What’s wrong with being brave from time to time? What would happen if you stepped out on a little bit faith or a little dose or hope and you ended up changing the life of one person? Now what would happen if you didn’t try?

Start getting in the habit of telling yourself to try now and not when…

Try being a little unstoppable (over and over again) and tell me how things turn out.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

Is it easy to acknowledge that life can be a race to be won if you work together and someone is there to help you when you fall?

When you are learning to understand who you are or gathering strength within yourself, it may be challenging to do this yourself.

If you have someone by your side who understands the depth of who you are, you can embrace a new you with your truth intact.

There is no need to go through life alongside those who will not be in your corner and there to support you in your uniqueness.

Seek to share your journey and heart in vulnerable spaces with those who really care about you.

If you cannot stand with someone, friends or loved ones, who care about you, stand firm in your truth and grow in spaces where you flourish.

You have power and greatness within yourself and who you are.

How you run your race of life in all that you are while deciding who will be by your side and who will lift you up when you stumble or fall is your choice.

Erase Self-Doubt

It takes a tremendous amount of effort to accomplish what you set out to do.

Presenting to yourself the ability to make a task, goal, or objective a part of your story of triumph is magnificent.

Although we often have dreams of what we want to do, we may face self-doubt. It is only when we can “erase” self-doubt that we find our true potential.

When doubts may arise, there are several things that you need to do:

1. Take a moment to sit with the doubt

2. Process all of your feelings in that given time

3. Think about, analyze, and acknowledge where the doubts came from

4. Work through the source of the doubt by addressing it effectively

5. Seek assistance to address the core of your doubts and how you will move forward

6. Let go and “erase” the doubt

One thing that you must always remember is that you are a limitless being with the potential to have absolutely anything that you want and work hard for. There are times that people put limits on themselves unnecessarily, but it can be avoided with a shift in their mindset.

How about an example? Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which you are leveling up, and you are surrounded by individuals who are more experienced and in that moment, you were feeling elements of imposter syndrome. Did you not work hard to get where you are? Did you not use your unique identity, gifts, and talents to be in the room, at the table, or in conversation with these individuals? So, how was imposter syndrome and self-doubt allowed to be present in the scenario?

I can say that I have faced moments of self-doubt in places of my transformation and evolution. However, I found my future self, beyond the doubts, by honing into my greatness and moving beyond what I was facing with the right tools in my toolbox.

No matter where you are in life, you have a responsibility and will face accountability for the future that you create. So, what will you do with the power, strength, amazing identity, intellect, and beauty inside of you?

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

Do you know that it is okay to embrace what is extremely different in your life or that of your family?

When something about you is different, it may feel like it would be easier to hide it or shelter yourself to protect what is meaningful to you.

Understanding the truth of who you are, even if it did not exist in your family before you, is so important.

If you hide something from others, you may be hiding your light, joy, and potential to be something amazing in the world.

Embracing what may seem like a “stain” in your life or identity is when you know that you can feel free to fly and be all that you are.

Only others can taint and call something about you a stain because they do not know the powerful things that come together to make you who you are.

Own the beauty of your differences, dear mixed girl, because you are so special in every way.

Love yourself for who you are and what makes you different because that is what will fill your life with unmistakable joy and lead you to much prosperity.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Do you understand that you were molded in a unique way and you define the future of all you are?

You are always growing and learning in all things that you do.

When you think of how you are changing, you can choose to be clay and mold yourself along the way.

If you approach your growth already formed as if you lack nothing, you will appear as though you’re a brick.

You’re worth and value are far deeper than you may know, but how you approach life and learning is important.

How you learn in your growth and journey will shape your future in every way.

As you should be, clay that can be molded can be beautiful, strong, valuable, and cherished.

Never stop challenging yourself and recall how you show up in life, as you always have a choice between being the “as-is” brick or being the valuable clay.

Imagination Is Valuable

When you want something to be a part of your future, you can relish in the fact that it began with a notion, dream, or thought.

In childhood, and in some ways as we carry on in life, imagination is one of the most valuable things that we can hold in our hearts. Since this is the case, why is that we lose touch with the will to simply deeply dream about what could be?

Imagination is a time to wonder, be hopeful, and also a place where we can make anything that we want a possibility right now, so allow your transformation, work, and your imagination to collide.

In a place where you have the opportunity to create anything that you want to happen, have, or leave behind, the opportunities are truly endless. Is that difficult to comprehend? It can be. Does that make it impossible? No.

Right now you have a chance to imagine, so what is stopping you?

-Is it believing that you cannot have what you dream of?

-Is it a transformation within you that has not occurred?

-Is it because you have not doubts in yourself or your abilities?

It can surely be a number of things within and beyond yourself, but your aim is to understand what is stopping your mission in creating possibilities, goals, and action steps to create a reality from thoughts.

At every turn you will take in personal and business transformation (which are in many ways, one in the same), you will need to evolve from the inside out. However, if you are unwilling or unable to imagine possibilities or see behind what may have been barriers presented in your past how can you create something great from what already lives and breathes inside of you?

There is something great and unique inside of you that can be tapped into with a bit of introspection, evolution, and reflection – this is a possibility in higher imagination, co-creation through healthy therapy and effective coaching, and your awareness.

How much of a value do you place of your future? How much is your legacy worth? Your dedication to your hopes and dreams starts now, so what will you do with that?

Your imagination is yours and what you will do with your future starts now.

Be blessed and be at peace.
