Dear Mixed Girl

Isn’t it special to have friends and acquaintances from different and similar cultural backgrounds who love, appreciate, and understand you?

There is something so wonderful about being yourself around a small group of people and knowing that you do not have to pretend to be something other than yourself.

It is a unique feeling to be amongst people that understand your struggles, identity, and what makes you who you are.

Know that when you can be amongst others who will not judge you or make you out to be something different than whom your heart and soul present you to be.

While there may be days, months, or even years when you are trying to find your unique group of friends or acquaintances, it is essential to learn from the difficulties and bumps in the road along the way.

Learning your worth, what makes you happy, and knowing the spaces in which you can freely be yourself are all valuable to lead a life that you love.

You can paint the picture of the life that you want, including your friends, acquaintances, and the spaces you will be in, with all of the colors that make your heart happy.

Life can be big and beautiful while your tribe of people may be small, but the love and feeling of freedom that you can get when you live your life through the vision that makes you happy will show you that everything will fall into place and you will always have your joy intact.

Letter Entitled “Friendship In Colors”

The “Dear Mixed Girl” letters are a series from Dr. KayLa N. Allen that share experiences, motivation, and compassion. These letters are linked to the “Dear Mixed Girl, What is Your Identity?” coaching program. Other related messaging that Dr. KayLa creates is to re-shape the way that mixed girls and women think about themselves and how they contribute to the world by being themselves.

No “mixed” experience is the same, but many parts of the biracial/multi-ethnic experience are similar. It is in these similarities that we can find individuals truths and ways in which we can become the best version of ourselves regardless of what the world may show us.

Dr. KayLa N. Allen’s greatest hope is to share with others her truth and what lives inside of her so that there can be sustainable changes and powerful impact in those living the life of a “mixed” girl.

Remain In Character

Do you know who you are?

Okay…do you know who you are around your family and friends?

Well…do you know who you are in business spaces?

Let me ask again, do you really know who you are?

If your answer to those questions shifted in extreme ways, you may need to do a little reflecting on the role you are playing in your life.

As an individual that is choosing to evolve your life consistently, you are leading in a way that many people never do, do not know how to do, or they think they do not have to do. No matter what type of leader you may be, your good character is of added value to what you do and for the growth of others, so it must be appreciated – that starts with you.

Value of yourself starts inside as does your identity, character, and sense of worthiness. While elements of you should adjust slightly depending on what you are facing, your character should not change.

When faced with life, your well-being, or anything that is at the center of your universe you must recall who you are and there is no room for you to change that definition for the sake of others.

If you do not remain in your true character amongst others and choose to play a role, you will not succeed and will not look the same as what you see in the mirror. The things that you want to have in your life and in what you do will only be possible if you are tapped into who you are, and you are elevating the power of yourself inside and out.

Conforming to meet a standard or become what you think others want to see in you will only give you what others want. True success and happiness are things that only you can grant yourself. So, if you are detached from the truth how can walk in your truth and be a beacon on light in the spaces that only you can walk in?

Your awareness of self and your well-being play a significant role in becoming the next version of yourself, so they must be in alignment. Do you understand what that really means? There are no changes to your heart and soul that must be changed if you are being a good person and you are staying along the path that you want to be on.

Only when you add a bit of sparkle and strength to the truth of your greatest self while honoring how hard you are working in your evolution, can you become success in a sustainable manner.

Seasons change and your mindset should as well, but you as a whole must remain the same at heart. People will love and cherish you for you. Keep working hard, learning, leveling up, and loving yourself, it will all pay off.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

Do you understand what it means for you to be who you are in all of your uniqueness?

To be who you are now, there was a need for strength and much resilience to be present.

Challenges were faced head-on, new levels were imagined before they could become possibilities, and your parents and ancestors were dreamers before you were alive so that you could have a chance to dream.

There is a literal strength embedded into your spiritual and physical creation, so living to the height of all you can be is what you owe yourself and those who came before you.

Know who you are, understand what you can be, and never lose sight of what you are made of – be it stardust, dreams, faith, love, strength, or whatever else you envision and know to be true.

You are the strength of all things that came together to create you.

When your strength becomes a vivid reality for you, your light will be impossible to dim.

Be more than what you know yourself to be because there is an exceptional strength inside of you that will bring forth prosperity, heighten your joy, and set you apart from others and into a space in which you will thrive in all that you are both for yourself and others.

The Mission Is Possible

When you set your mind on a vision, it is exciting, and it can be so vivid in your mind. That which we see in our mind as a vision can be both clear and present in the physical realm if we understand that it is a mission to be executed with a plan of action.

A mission can lead you down a treacherous and confusing road, and it may even lead you to a metaphorical dead end.

Understand that every mission is possible, and unknown obstructions will appear along the road; you just need to have a vision and a strategic plan for reaching the next milestone.

Having the wherewithal about yourself and the fortitude to push yourself to achieve a mission is what it will take to understand your abilities.

There is nothing that you cannot achieve with some effort, hope, and faith. Planning out a logical goal with set objectives over some time is a mission of focus and dedication, and it is something that can be done.

On two different ends of a spectrum, there are missions that are indeed possible.

1. A busy person with a full-time life looking to tap into their passion vs. 2. A person who is starting to envision a different way of living

While you may have a lot on your plate or other obligations, this does not mean that you cannot make time for your passion. There may be further challenges, but planning, having an environment that works for creativity and work efforts, and a good support system are vital for you to make things happen.

If you are in the space of wonder and thought, you can make those thoughts and visions become goals by beginning with geared and processed planning on paper. You can work through your visions and make them useful at entirely different left by wisely shifting your perspective and planning.

While no set of circumstances will equal an easy mission, you can guarantee that at every turn, you will learn and grow so that when you reach the next milestone, you will be better prepared for the obstacles in the road.

I have been challenged in so many ways as a woman, black/brown individual, and leader in society, education, and business. Still, I have not met a challenge that I could not shift and turn into a mission that was indeed possible to achieve.

May you find the support you need, make wise decisions, and challenge yourself beyond what you already know to become what you envision.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

How do you connect to the strength and power of those who paved the way before you?

If you walk through life and understand who you are and where you come from, you should learn and always remember that you are a living legacy in many ways.

The way you carry yourself embodies the strength of what your ancestors have overcome and who you can be.

You are something special, so be true to that and always honor your identity in what you do and how you carry yourself.

The spirit of your ancestors is present when you allow yourself to be present in your passion, good works, and how you serve others in ways that only you can.

Dear mixed girl, you can feel the spirit of the past if you listen and embrace the truth of your natural wonder, I promise.

In the moments of quiet and when you need it most, live and meditate on everything that makes you unique and wonderful.

There is greatness living and breathing inside of you; you just have you recognize its presence and tap into it so that you can find success in all that you are and can be.

Strength Is Tough

Finding your way through difficult situations and maintaining a sense of strength within yourself takes strength, but it is tough in more than one way.

Completing a task or making something happen is only one part, the external part, of creating a reality.

Some of the most difficult work to be done happens within yourself when strength may not be enough to get something done.

Things that are worth having and things that you really want in life will not fall into your lap with ease.

You will be met with tears, trips and falls, lies and false judgment, naysayers, bias, and everything in between when you are trying to do great things and be a good person.

Strength is not something that is only important from a physical standpoint; it must be developed from the inside out if you aim for it to hold a lasting and meaningful value.

You are a multifaceted person that has been met with many sets of circumstances, obstacles, and missions throughout your life, so how could your element of strength be one dimensional? It isn’t. There are many parts to it.

Your strength requires you to be a whole person. You must be working on your health from the inside out. You must understand that you will not always be working from a place of 100% and that is okay just as well.

Being strong is a part of who you are, it is not an identity, so keep that in mind.

No matter what you may face in life, your strength may need to be present so that you can accomplish your goals but that does not mean that you cannot be gentle, human, or “soft” at times.

Be yourself. Be patient. Practice self-empathy. Work hard to find the balance that you need in your life, and you will walk into the life that you deserve.

Life will be met with trials and storms, but you will be the determining factor in how your strength will show up.

Even if the odds seem like they are stacked against you or if many things seem to be going terribly wrong, one thing is for sure, you are so much stronger than you think.

Be blessed and be at peace.

Dear Mixed Girl

How do you carry out the ancestral legacy that you are while developing generational dreams to be lived through by those yet to be born?

Stories are how we tell of who and what we are. What we overcome as diverse girls and women can only be understood through our hearts, minds, souls, and the legacies we leave behind. The stories we share with the world and our loved ones are how we rise beyond the most challenging and beautiful times in life.

While some days are straightforward, others are indescribable, and it is in those days we can call on the strength of our ancestors and what makes us all that we are. Every time you learn and grow, you are equipping another part of your future and adding to your bank of wisdom. Each piece of your story of success and overcoming is a valuable addition to your legacy and the fulfillment of your ancestors’ wildest dreams.

You are magnificent, you are a legacy which so much to offer the world, and your stories of the past, present, and future are a part of what will fuel the dreams and tighten the bootstraps of future generations.

Don’t Sway In The Wind

Being a stronghold in your world as life switches, twists, and turns is a valuable and key part of becoming successful and the next version of who you are supposed to be.

Getting caught in the wind and flowing with the breeze, no matter which way it may turn, is not only going to deter your path, but it may also stop you from reaching your destination.

Having your feet firmly planted in life can be difficult, but readjusting when that difficulty arises may be the key to ensuring your next steps can be taken.

When life is grand and simple, we can run, skip, jump, and maybe twirl along the path because there may not be any obstacles along the way. In this space, enjoy every moment and take advantage of the opportunities set before you. There will be many times like this, and it is up to you to acknowledge that you have this exceptional and rare time in front of you.

However, when life is not so easy, you must remember that you are in control even still.

For me, God is the stronghold in my life and always will be. Many times, I could have rolled along like tumbleweed or swayed in the wind like a tree in the forest, but I didn’t do that. I understood that God had something greater for me, so I could not walk in that path because if I did, I could not become who I am now nor who I am called to be.

Swaying in the wind not only affects you, it affects everyone and everything around you.

Always know that you are a person, being, entity, brand, and visionary that is Earth-shaking, life-changing, and a gift to so many people if only you tap into and hold firm to everything that makes you who you are and multiply that times infinity.

Dear Mixed Girl

Have you ever felt small or powerless around others when you knew that you were much better than that?

Sometimes we get caught in the darkness of words, doubts, fears, or beliefs that come from things that don’t live inside of us.

When that happens somehow we can lose our light and that surely isn’t fair, dear mixed girl.

As girls who are different, we have to remember that we are different and yet we still have power and purpose in this world.

There is no reason that we have to live in darkness that someone or something tries to cloud us with because we hold a light that brings forth our greatness.

The strength that we have to tap into is that in which we recall all that makes us great, beautiful, unique, wonderful, important, intelligent, and special because nothing can take any of that away.

It may be hard to remember those things when your light grows dim, but you still have the power to increase your light if you consistently try.

If you ever feel that your power is being taken away from you, reclaim your light in the darkness and own the wonder, fabulousness, and uniqueness that is you.

Celebrating Life

When did it become a challenge for so many of us to pause and remember to celebrate life in the ways that makes us happy?

This year as I celebrated another year of life, I made it a point to do a few things that I like to do and I took some time to think about why it was such a big deal to do so.

Are you the kind of person that loves to celebrate other people, plan birthday celebrations, find special birthday cards and do all sorts of kind things when a time for celebration arises? Lots of us are.

There are countless events that happen in our lives, but how often do we take the time to do the things that we would like to do to celebrate them?

When you celebrate yourself, put yourself at the center of the celebration and do not worry about who will be there or who will like what they see. No celebration of your life or event within it is for the show of others, it has to be about what will make you happy.

Only when you can say that you were happy about the life celebrations that you carry out, will you know that you are doing the right thing for you.

For my birthday I did so many things from artsy things to yummy food things and all of it made me happy first and foremost. After going through so many things in life, from overcoming domestic violence to the challenges of finding my voice, I had to figure out what it meant to celebrate myself and be okay with it. I’m honored to know what that means and love it 100%!

When you know what it means to celebrate special moments your way, you cannot let it go because the joy and feelings that it brings will change everything forever.

There is nothing like celebrating your life authentically and not worrying about judgment. There is no time like the present to start being phenomenally you every day!
