Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

As a little girl you have/had dreams of becoming something that is wonderful, beautiful, powerful, strong, or unique and nothing can be more fabulous than what you dream of, right?

Sometimes in our mixed lives, there can be things that come along and try to show us that are dreams cannot become a reality because of who we are or how we look.

Remember this, dear mixed girl, there is power in your little mixed dream that no one can take away.

With that power that lives and breathes inside of you, how can you harness the greatness that also resides inside of you?

Your beautiful dreams are a possibility and will become a reality because of those who came before you.

Your ancestors and parents have paved the way for you to dream and live out the life that you want, hope for, and work hard for because they love you, believe in you, and want the best for you.

Do not fall for what the world tries to tell you about who you are or what you are not.

There is power, strength, integrity, dignity, beauty, culture, flavor, music, colors, vibrations, and so much more living inside of you.

Let your dreams ride on the flow of that which runs through your body, and know that there is nothing that can stop your once little mixed dreams from coming true.

Dear Mixed Girl

Design Your Home in You

Dear Mixed Girl,

Did you know that just like a physical house becomes a home with love and how you make it feel, you have the power to create the same within yourself?

Everything that is around you from day to day will influence what lives inside of you, so it is important for you to take care of the home inside of your heart.

If you are surrounded by things that make you unhappy, frustrated, confused, doubtful, etc. your internal home will not feel joyful, peaceful, or safe.

Do you know what it takes to make your inner house feel like a home?

It is important to do a little spring cleaning inside of your heart and soul from time to time – this includes people and things.

You oversee how your home feels, don’t you?

Cleaning up takes some effort, but it is worth it every time.

Design your home in a way that you can be proud of starting today by bringing in joy, safety, peace, light, love, and every bit of your mixed identity.

Dear Mixed Girl

Have you ever been told that your life is easier because of your mixed identity?

Countless people may believe that you do not face countless challenges because of who you are or what you look like, but that is not true.

Life is full of twists and turns for mixed girls, and that can be hard to understand from the outside looking in.

Even though no one can quite understand that your life is not easy, you must not make a big deal out of the flow of your life.

Remain true to your path and your life.

Know that you do not need to prove your challenges nor the depth of your journey to anyone.

Become the next version of yourself with great consistency and you can create the life that you want without fear or doubts that it can be taken away from you in any way.

You are stronger and more powerful than you know. Keep your eyes facing forward and your heart centered on the greatness that lives inside of you.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Do you ever feel like it’s hard to be all that you are while others may be judging your every move?

Your definition is never quite the same from day to day, but it does not have to be.

If you are being challenged or questioned, you can acknowledge the hurt, but you must move forward in your light and regain your strength.

Others may not understand how it hurts to be you, but know that you are not alone in being a mixed girl in an often scripted, biased, and black or white world.

Even when it comes, you cannot let your pain, confusion, or frustrations consume you; you are much bigger than that.

Others cannot shape your character and all that you are.

You can always be yourself, so do not hold onto fears or doubts about being all that you are.

Sometimes moments or people may cause you hurt, but you cannot change who you are.

The only way that your heart can be happy/joyful and you can be successful is if you love yourself inside and out, so do that today and every day.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Did you know that what we feed our insides generates a world outside of our bodies?

Every mixed family has experiences of food that serve a plate of nourishment, no matter what the spread of colors and flavors present.

This nourishment is the very desire of our souls, and it can only be filled with what our “mixed” taste desires.

Nourishment to our souls is colorful, confusing, bold, and creative, so why should we silence that which our hearts and souls need?

Fine-tuning what our hearts and souls desire is a journey through life that continues to be shaped and reshaped, but it is always worth it.

You must tailor, cut, patch, and adjust what you nourish your life with – this is not just about food; it is about what we feed our minds as well.

Grow nourished inside, as you have the flavors, spices, and recipes of every element of your mixed life – (open the cabinet, my dear).

Sometimes we may need something to show us love, while other times we may need something that encourages the very fibers of our being.

No matter how you nourish yourself, be okay with what that looks like, as others may judge that which feeds your mixed soul.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Has someone ever asked you why you dare to be so boldy mixed in what you are doing?

Occasionally people may say that you have to behave one way or another, but please know that their words are surely not true.

If you decide that you want to dress a certain way that is culturally connected, embrace that because it makes you happy.

Never change yourself to fit in with others or justify your reason for being you.

Your life is mixed and nothing can change that, but that does not mean that you have to alter your identity in any way.

You have the right to be you through and through, no excuses, reasons, or definitions required.

Be bold and okay with being all that you are.

The right to be you is not defined by the voice or views of others.

Be you in every way possible and your joy will never escape you.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Has there ever been a time when you were attracted to something you wanted out of life then you faced immediate rejection?

We are often walking through life in a way that is filled with fear, however, we cannot let that break down the very figments of our dreams.

People will reject you and try to break your hope, but you cannot allow that to happen.

Your attraction to a passion, dream, art, or space of creativity is for your exploration, presentation, and love.

You may look different than others but you are still allowed to dream.

There are not enough rejections in the world to break that which you are naturally attracted to.

Your heart, soul, culture, and blood fill you with something so special that only you can do – never forget that.

When you believe in yourself, use the rejections and dismissals to make a world that allows you to be expressive and be free.

There will never be a time that you have to become less than what you beautifully are.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Have you ever been called a rude word that is connected to your race, identity, or ethnicity? I have.

Sometimes these words can pierce the soul and bring about horrible feelings.

When this happens to you, what do you do about it?

It is so very important that you take a moment to honor your truth and love who you are.

Only the words that you allow inside of your heart can harm you.

This is not to say that you should not speak up or against the ugly words, but you have to take control of how you feel after the fact.

You can make the choice to understand why someone chooses hurtful words when talking to you.

Often when someone “calls someone out of their name” they have their own issues and it has nothing to do with the person being hurt.

Know that you choose the words that identify who you are.

Do not ever allow someone to throw hurtful words at you; stand up for who you are and remain proud of all that makes you unique.

Keep the words that fill you with love in your identity and being close to your heart.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

If you are a mixed girl that comes from a difficult family setting or maybe your parents didn’t stay together for whatever reason, you are not alone.

Understand that what your parents went through is not your fault nor does it define you.

How your family may treat you has nothing to do with you.

Every person makes a choice to be who they are and design the life that they want the life that they lead; the same is true for your parents and your family.

Far too often people may take their feelings or problems out on you, but you can’t let that become a part of your identity.

You are in charge of the direction of your life.

You get to decide how your life looks now and in the future.

No amount of dysfunction from your parents or family can change who you are inside unless you allow it to.

Remember, this is your life.

Pick up the pen and paper and start writing your book of life, and don’t forget that you get to choose what the story is and will be.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Have you ever been told that you are 1% of something, so that is what you are?

If you are like me, then the answer is yes (maybe several times over).

When you look at the color of your skin or the ethnicity/race on your birth certificate what does that mean to you?

Just like determining whom you want to be in business or school, you decide how you identify yourself in life.

You are a “mixed” individual and you can share that freely with the world.

There is nothing that anyone can say that will stop you from being all that you are.

Do what you can to not be offended by people’s assumptions when it comes to your race.

Don’t give people the power to hurt or belittle you based on the color of your skin.

You are beautiful inside and out.

There is no label, definition, or placement that the world can hold over you.

This is your life, so live it out loud and in bold, beautiful colors.
