Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Have you ever been called a rude word that is connected to your race, identity, or ethnicity? I have.

Sometimes these words can pierce the soul and bring about horrible feelings.

When this happens to you, what do you do about it?

It is so very important that you take a moment to honor your truth and love who you are.

Only the words that you allow inside of your heart can harm you.

This is not to say that you should not speak up or against the ugly words, but you have to take control of how you feel after the fact.

You can make the choice to understand why someone chooses hurtful words when talking to you.

Often when someone “calls someone out of their name” they have their own issues and it has nothing to do with the person being hurt.

Know that you choose the words that identify who you are.

Do not ever allow someone to throw hurtful words at you; stand up for who you are and remain proud of all that makes you unique.

Keep the words that fill you with love in your identity and being close to your heart.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

If you are a mixed girl that comes from a difficult family setting or maybe your parents didn’t stay together for whatever reason, you are not alone.

Understand that what your parents went through is not your fault nor does it define you.

How your family may treat you has nothing to do with you.

Every person makes a choice to be who they are and design the life that they want the life that they lead; the same is true for your parents and your family.

Far too often people may take their feelings or problems out on you, but you can’t let that become a part of your identity.

You are in charge of the direction of your life.

You get to decide how your life looks now and in the future.

No amount of dysfunction from your parents or family can change who you are inside unless you allow it to.

Remember, this is your life.

Pick up the pen and paper and start writing your book of life, and don’t forget that you get to choose what the story is and will be.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Have you ever been told that you are 1% of something, so that is what you are?

If you are like me, then the answer is yes (maybe several times over).

When you look at the color of your skin or the ethnicity/race on your birth certificate what does that mean to you?

Just like determining whom you want to be in business or school, you decide how you identify yourself in life.

You are a “mixed” individual and you can share that freely with the world.

There is nothing that anyone can say that will stop you from being all that you are.

Do what you can to not be offended by people’s assumptions when it comes to your race.

Don’t give people the power to hurt or belittle you based on the color of your skin.

You are beautiful inside and out.

There is no label, definition, or placement that the world can hold over you.

This is your life, so live it out loud and in bold, beautiful colors.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

To have a place and space where you can be yourself is so special.

Where do you call your safe place?

I often think of my safe place as my writing.

Life is hard enough without differences in place, but with them, we must do whatever we can to be ourselves and be happy about that.

A safe place can be at home, in the park, in artwork, in prayer, in church, in meditation, and anywhere else that you can imagine.

When things make you feel like you can’t be yourself, think about a way to feel in tune with your heart and soul again.

It doesn’t have to be anything major; it can be watching your favorite Christmas movie in May.

You deserve a space, no matter where you are in the world or how old you are, to be safe and happy.

So, today and always, make sure that you have a safe space to be quirky, crazy, beautiful, loving, intelligent, and wonderful you.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Matching who is in the mirror with whom you are designed to be can be quite confusing, especially from the outside looking in.

As you grow up and become uniquely you, you may get to a place in time where you see yourself on a seesaw, wondering which direction to go.

Remain who you are, be patient with whom you are becoming, and appreciate when every moment is difficult.

Only when we can place a value on what makes our hearts sing can we truly and freely take a beautiful journey through all that we are.

Some people may tell you that you cannot do something because of your cultural background, but it is not valid.

The world is constantly changing, and the only way you can find that special place where you desire to reside is by being uniquely you.

Challenge yourself to be curious beyond what you may already know.

Evolving your thoughts and being exactly [who] you are called to be will drown the sounds of doubts from others as you gift the world with your greatness.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

You are one that your ancestors could not have even imagined.

No matter how old you are, you are filled with centuries of wonder, greatness, legacies, and stories.

Look at your hands and noticed the veins filled with the blood and DNA of those who came before you.

In the silence, I know that you can hear your ancestors speak.

In the mirror and from pictures, you can see how much you look like your ancestors.

Know where you came from.

Learn the stories of lives and your culture.

Teach others, now and forever, of your wonder.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Your uniqueness and all that makes you wonderful will always bring out negativity, bullying, and belittling from others.

Still, you must be bold in the skin that you are in.

You can become all that you dream of by remaining who you are.

Don’t ever bend over backwards to try to make others like your or believe in you.

There is nothing that you can do to make the negative words from others change, unless they want to change.

Challenge yourself to accept your differences and learn to understand that being different is a gift and a blessing unlike any other.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

When you think of your family what do you see?

Do see the combination of your grandmother’s and mother’s faces in your face?

Know that even though you may look like someone or have their “blood running through your veins”. you are your own person, and family is what you make it.

You are not required to identify with others because of your personal relationship with them.

A family shows you love, understands your heart, and chooses to keep evolving.

Any family member that does not respect you or treat you with dignity, does not have to be in your life.

You deserve kindness, love, joy, and peace (at the very least).

Your family may view you through their chosen lenses, but you are the view that can shape your life and family as you see fit.

Be yourself and challenge norms that affect your life.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Do you feel like dysfunction has become the rotten apple in your already “mixed up” life?

A lot of times we see so many problems and dysfunction within our families and social circles, and they can often cause us to feel drained.

That feeling of carrying a heavy load is difficult enough without dysfunction plaguing the world around us.

Enough is enough.

As mixed girls, it is time that we make it our mission to realize that dysfunction does not define us.

The most wonderful things about you must come to the light.

Only then can you find your peace and become everything that your heart desires.

Know that dysfunction does not define you – not now, not ever!

Be yourself and grow in strength so that any dysfunction that is present will become a permanent thing of the past.
