Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Do you ever stop and ask yourself, “Really, who am I?”

That question can be so painful and confusing.

It’s equally difficult to be true to the answer.

One of the most important things for your life is that you understand that only you know the real you.

People may question or doubt your identity, but you’re in charge of who you are.

Love every part of who you are, even that which people don’t understand.

You are wonderful inside and out.

Live in the greatness and love that is you.

Keep your heart intact, weirdness present, joy in your smile, and power in your walk.

You shape your place in the world and all that you do by being true to your core identity.

There is no one nor anything better than being you.

If you ever forget who you are, embrace your reflection.

-Dr. KayLa N. Allen’s “Dear Mixed Girl” Letters

The “Dear Mixed Girl” letters are a series from Dr. KayLa N. Allen that share experiences, motivation, and compassion. These letters are linked to the “Dear Mixed Girl, What is Your Identity?” coaching program. Related messaging that Dr. KayLa creates is to re-shape the way that mixed girls and women think about themselves and how they contribute to the world by being themselves.

No “mixed” experience is the same, but many parts of the biracial/multi-ethnic experience are similar. It is in these similarities that we can find individuals truths and ways in which we can become the best version of ourselves regardless of what the world may show us.

Dr. KayLa N. Allen’s greatest hope is to share with others her truth and what lives inside of her so that there can be sustainable changes and powerful impact in those living the life of a “mixed” girl. Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Is there is a place inside of you that feels safe and protected.

In this space you find peace and you can be whomever your heart tells you that you are.

In the outside world, don’t hide inside of yourself.

There is freedom in being free.

When we get comfortable with hiding, we can lose a part of our hearts and identity.

You can be all that you are in a “live out loud” kind of a way.

Remember that although you are familiar and comfortable with that safe hiding place, it is always inside of you.

Nothing can take away your strength or your identity.

Hiding makes life feel difficult, confusing, sad, and sometimes hopeless.

No more hiding, okay?

Let’s be proud of all that we are.

Let’s be free from our hiding places and walk into the sunshine, goodness, and light of the world.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

There are days when you may question who you are and what the depth of your heart is.

It gets even more difficult when others make you feel like you should question yourself.

As you walk through life remember that no matter how hard things get, no one can take your heart away from you.

Whatever you do, please do not harden your heart when people try to challenge you, your existence, or any part of who you are.

Be kind to yourself while loving the joy and compassion in your heart.

Don’t change who you are or dim the light in your heart because when you do that you start to erase who you are.

Your heart is designed to be all of the greatness that it is, so welcome that and love who you are.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

In a world where it can be so difficult to navigate through life, you must always remember to be yourself.

Authenticity in all things means that you have the courage to break norms that may be set before you.

Yes, it will always be hard to be every ounce of wonderful that you are, but every lesson that you learn along the winding road will strengthen and empower you to look at the world with your head held high.

Stand out and be proud to do so.

Don’t allow external people or situations to break you down…you deserve the best!

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

The feeling of being put into a box when it comes to how you identify yourself is a horrible emotion.

On the same hand it is frustrating when people tell you to just choose one race/ethnicity.

The effort to push someone to prove who they are is despicable, but if you think about it in another light, it is a chance for you to shine all of [your] glory.

Side note: if you tell people that you are mixed with brujeria, you are my people. Lol!!

You do not have to choose one or prove yourself.

Every curl on your head, area of poof, or the beautify of your skin is yours.

Own it & be proud!

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

Did you know that there is a crown on your head?!

That’s right, you’re royalty!

The beautiful hair on your head is your crown that the world gets to behold.

Recall your natural roots and be true to yourself.

Your hair can be worn in whatever style brings you joy, but remember that no one changes the root of who you are.

Wear your crown proudly – if you let it slip lift your head to the sky and love yourself once more.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

In a field of flowers, be the blossom that glistens in the sunlight and radiates beauty (inside and out) in the storms.

Be the bouquet of sweet scents in the world through the fabulousness of all that you are.

You can and must choose to stand strong, beautiful inside and be true to who are even when people may make you feel small.

Even if you are not living a beautiful, picture perfect life, you still have a chance to make a wonderful future for yourself.

Notice and always recall how far you have come.

As long as you have a dream in your heart and passion in your soul, you can become all that unique you hopes for.

Dear Mixed Girl

Dear Mixed Girl,

You are more than that “other” box that you have to check from time to time.

You are a multitude of greatness, culture, languages, beauty, intelligence, wonder, and possibilities.

There is no box that [is] large enough or deep enough to confine [you] to one space in time.

Nothing can block any element of who you are – never forget that.

One of the most important things that you must do throughout your life is to give your being and your legacy a deeper definition than the world could ever create.

Always feel free to be yourself; no one can define or bind your life except you.
